If you’re anything like me and love to travel more than you love to stay home, then you should definitely consider writing your own travel guide to a place you love and know well. Here are 5 reasons why:
You Know the Place Like the Back of Your Hand. Who better to write about a place than someone who can see it and feel it and taste it. You know the air, the colors, the smells and the sounds. You can close your eyes and tell someone how to get there, what they’ll see, what they should wear and why they should go there (now). This might be your own backyard or the place you visit on your vacation year after year. A new visitor to this place needs and wants your insights!
It’s Great Therapy. Once you start thinking about your destination, you will get completely wrapped up in writing about it. You’ll think about it all day, start working on it as soon as you get home from your day job, and then dream about the insider secrets you want to tell your reader. You’ll get caught up in researching the history and writing to people asking for permission to use their quotes and maps. Are you depressed about your life? Write a travel book! You won’t have time to be sad.
You’ll Experience This Destination (and others) More Richly. Once you start thinking about places as a travel writer, you begin to see things you never noticed. You look at colors more closely, observe people with intent, eat more consciously, and put words to all the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the places you go. You develop a new lens to see your world, a third eye. Every place becomes a travel destination and another guide.
You Can Show Off Your Travel Photos. I love to take photographs on my travels and have approximately one million photos of past journeys. A few have made it into photo albums or frames, but there’s only so much space on the walls. But as a travel writer, I can now use them in my books and articles. Travel guides need great images, so click away and show them off!
You’ll Be the Most Interesting Person at Your Next Party. Let’s face it. We are fascinated by writers and artists. We love the creative mind, and we all want a piece of it! So why not join the party and be one of them. Think about it: When that beautiful woman or handsome young guy sits next to you at the bar and asks, “What do you do?”, you can say, “Oh…me? I’m a travel writer.” You may not make any money with your book, but you’ll be more attractive. In other words, no ka-ching, but a ton of cachet!
Writing about travel has become my passion. Cliché, yes, but it’s true. if you need something new in your life, I highly recommend that you give travel writing a try. I’ve written two travel guides this year, and I’m already planning my next, this new one about the island of Corsica. This will, of course, necessitate that I live there for a while. How cool is that?
